'Tetris' Movie in the Works With 'Intergalactic Significance'

The popular video game back in the '80s is being adapted into a feature film and developed as a brand.

"Lego" had its success as a feature film and now another geometrically-shaped game "Tetris" is heading to the big screen. A live-action movie based on the classic '80s video game is being developed by Treshold Entertainment in collaboration with the Tetris Company. "It's a very big, epic sci-fi movie," Threshold's CEO Larry Kasanoff told Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy exclusively. "This isn't a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page

We're not giving feet to the geometric shapes." Teasing on what people may expect from the movie, he said, "What you [will] see in 'Tetris' is the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance." Apart from being developed, "Tetris" is yet to have a director or cast attached. The plan is to build a brand on the legendary game. "Brands are the new stars of Hollywood. We have a story behind 'Tetris' which makes it a much more imaginative thing," he said, adding "We certainly have the canvas for location-based entertainment based on the epicness." Kasanoff previously adapted 1995 game "Mortal Kombat" for a feature movie that grossed $70 million and spawned a sequel two years later.
