Reality crumbles as Tetris movie confirmed
Some people say Hollywood is out of ideas. Other people say it's a place of wonders, filled with the kinds of insane geniuses who are planning on bringing us a live action Tetris movie.
Yes, you read that right. Tetris,Alexey Pajitnov's famous 1980s puzzle game, released on just about every platform to have graced the hands of man and starring such notable characters as L Brick, T Brick, and everyone's favourite Line Brick, is coming to a cinema near you.
As confirmed to the Wall Street Journal, production companyThreshold Entertainment has partnered with Pajitnov's The Tetris Company to develop the epic tale of descending bricks and their endless quest for linear unity into a blockbuster. It's not Threshold's first attempt at a video game movie, having produced a huge amount of Mortal Kombat material for film and TV.
Unfortunately, as so often happens with video game adaptations, the integral story of Tetris is being cast aside. Threshold CEO Larry Kasanoff revealed there is already a new story in place, saying: "It's a very big, epic sci-fi movie. This isn't a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We're not giving feet to the geometric shapes. What you see inTetris is the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance." We think he was actually being serious, too.
There are no named writers yet, nor a director nor a cast attached. The film doesn't have a release window, let alone a release date. It does not have a reason to exist.
The biggest question surrounding a Tetris is really a simple "why?" Not as in "why on Earth would anyone think there could be a movie made from a block-stacking puzzle game?" but as in "why would anyone try to outdo the incredible Tetris movie that already exists?" Perhaps there are some questions not meant to be answered.
